Michael Jackson, Pop music legend, dead at 50

Michael Jackson, the show-stopping singer whose best-selling albums -- including "Off the Wall," "Thriller" and "Bad" -- and electrifying stage presence made him one of the most popular artists of all time, died Thursday, CNN has confirmed.
Michael Jackson, shown in 2008, was one of the biggest pop stars in history.

Michael Jackson, shown in 2008, was one of the biggest pop stars in history.
He was 50.

He collapsed at his residence in the Holmby Hills section of Los Angeles, California, about noon Pacific time, suffering cardiac arrest, according to brother Randy Jackson. He died at UCLA Medical Center.

Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office said an autopsy would probably be done on the singer Friday, with results expected that afternoon. Video Watch crowds gather at Jackson's hospital »

"Michael Jackson made culture accept a person of color," the Rev. Al Sharpton said. "To say an 'icon' would only give these young people in Harlem a fraction of what he was. He was a historic figure that people will measure music and the industry by."

Jackson's blazing rise to stardom -- and later fall from grace -- is among the most startling of show business tales. The son of a steelworker, he rose to fame as the lead singer of the Jackson 5, a band he formed with his brothers in the late 1960s. By the late '70s, as a solo artist, he was topping the charts with cuts from "Off the Wall," including "Rock With You" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough." In 1982, he released "Thriller," an album that eventually produced seven hit singles. An appearance the next year on a Motown Records 25th-anniversary special cemented his status as the biggest star in the country. Timeline: The life of Michael Jackson »

For the rest of the 1980s, they came no bigger. "Thriller's" follow-up, 1987's "Bad," sold almost as many copies. A new Jackson album -- a new Jackson appearance -- was a pop culture event. iReport: Share your memories of Michael Jackson

The pop music landscape was changing, however, opening up for rap, hip-hop and what came to be called "alternative" -- and Jackson was seen as out of step.

His next release, 1991's "Dangerous," debuted at No. 1 but "only" produced one top-ranking single -- "Black or White" -- and that song earned criticism for its inexplicably violent ending, in which Jackson was seen smashing car windows and clutching his crotch.

And then "Dangerous" was knocked out of its No. 1 spot on the album charts by Nirvana's "Nevermind," an occurrence noted for its symbolism by rock critics.

After that, more attention was paid to Jackson's private life than his music career, which faltered. A 1995 two-CD greatest hits, "HIStory," sold relatively poorly, given the huge expense of Jackson's recording contract: about 7 million copies, according to Recording Industry of America certifications.

A 2001 album of new material, "Invincible," did even worse.

In 2005, he went to trial on child-molestation charges. He was acquitted.

In July 2008, after three years away from the spotlight, Jackson announced a series of concerts at London's O2 Arena as his "curtain call." Some of the shows, initially scheduled to begin in July, were eventually postponed until 2010.

Rise to stardom

Michael Jackson was born August 29, 1958, to Joe Jackson, a Gary, Indiana, steelworker, and his wife, Katherine. By the time he was 6, he had joined his brothers in a musical group organized by his father, and by the time he was 10, the group -- the Jackson 5 -- had been signed to Motown. Watch Michael Jackson's life in video

He made his first television appearance at age 11.

Jackson, a natural performer, soon became the group's front man. Music critic Langdon Winner, reviewing the group's first album, "Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5," for Rolling Stone, praised Michael's versatile singing and added, "Who is this 'Diana Ross,' anyway?"

The group's first four singles -- "I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There" -- went to No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart, the first time any group had pulled off that feat. There was even a Jackson 5 cartoon series on ABC.

In 1972, he hit No. 1 as a solo artist with the song "Ben."

The group's popularity waned as the '70s continued, and Michael eventually went solo full time. He played the Scarecrow in the 1978 movie version of "The Wiz," and released the album "Off the Wall" in 1979. Its success paved the way for "Thriller," which eventually became the best-selling album in history, with 50 million copies sold worldwide.

At that point, Michael Jackson became ubiquitous.

Seven of "Thriller's" nine cuts were released as singles; all made the Top Ten. The then-new cable channel MTV, criticized for its almost exclusively white playlist, finally started playing Jackson's videos. They aired incessantly, including a 14-minute minimovie of the title cut. ("Weird Al" Yankovic cemented his own stardom by lampooning Jackson's song "Beat It" with a letter-perfect parody video.)

On the Motown Records' 25th-anniversary special -- a May 1983 TV extravaganza with notable turns by the Temptations, the Four Tops and Smokey Robinson -- it was Michael Jackson who stopped the show.

Already he was the most popular musician in America, riding high with "Thriller." But something about his electrifying performance of "Billie Jean," complete with the patented backward dance moves, boosted his stardom to a new level.

People copied his Jheri-curled hair and single-gloved, zippered-jacket look. Showbiz veterans such as Fred Astaire praised his chops. He posed for photos with Ronald and Nancy Reagan at the White House. Paul McCartney teamed with him on three duets, two of which -- "The Girl Is Mine" and "Say Say Say" -- became top five hits. Jackson became a Pepsi spokesman, and when his hair caught fire while making a commercial, it was worldwide news.

It all happened very fast -- within a couple years of the Motown special. But even at the time of the "Motown 25" moonwalk, fame was old hat to Michael Jackson. He hadn't even turned 25 himself, but he'd been a star for more than half his life. He was given the nickname the "King of Pop" -- a spin on Elvis Presley's status as "the King of Rock 'n' Roll" -- and few questioned the moniker.

Relentless attention

But, as the showbiz saying has it, when you're on top of the world, there's nowhere to go but down. The relentless attention given Jackson started focusing as much on his eccentricities -- some real, some rumored -- as his music.

As the Web site Allmusic.com notes, he was rumored to sleep in a hyperbaric chamber and to have purchased the bones of John Merrick, the "Elephant Man." (Neither was true.) He did have a pet chimpanzee, Bubbles; underwent a series of increasingly drastic plastic surgeries; established an estate, Neverland, filled with zoo animals and amusement park rides; and managed to purchase the Beatles catalog from under Paul McCartney's nose, which displeased the ex-Beatle immensely.

In 1990s and 2000s, Jackson found himself pasted across the media for his short-lived marriages, the first to Elvis Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie; his 2002 claim that then Sony Records head Tommy Mottola was racist; his behavior and statements during a 2003 interview with British journalist Martin Bashir done for a documentary called "Living With Michael Jackson;" his changing physical appearance; and, above all, the accusations that he sexually molested young boys at Neverland.

The first such accusation, in 1993, resulted in a settlement to the 13-year-old accuser (rumored to be as high as $20 million), though no criminal charges were filed, Allmusic.com notes.

He also fell deeply in debt and was forced to sell some of his assets. Neverland was one of many holdings that went on the block. However, an auction of material from Neverland, scheduled for April, was called off and all items returned to Jackson.

Interest in Jackson never faded, however, even if some of it was prurient. In 2008, when he announced 10 comeback shows in London, beginning in July 2009, the story made worldwide news. The number of concerts was later increased to 50.

Seventy-five thousand tickets sold in four hours when they went on sale in March.

However, when the shows were postponed until 2010, rumors swept the Internet that Jackson was not physically prepared and possibly suffering from skin cancer.

At the time, the president and CEO of AEG Live, Randy Phillips, said, "He's as healthy as can be -- no health problems whatsover."

Jackson held open auditions for dancers in April in Los Angeles.
He is survived by his three children, Prince Michael I, Paris and Prince Michael II.

Columbia Drops the Ball on Brad Pitt's Moneyball

They can't all be home runs for Brad Pitt.

His latest project, the Steven Soderbergh-directed Moneyball, has been put into "limited turnaround" by Columbia Pictures honcho Amy Pascal after receiving a much different final draft of a script she once fought for.

Production on the film was set to start Monday in Phoenix, and with only 96 hours to go, Soderbergh's change in vision unsettled Pascal and the brakes were immediately applied to the project.

The "limited turnaround" gives Soderbergh the opportunity to try and settle with another studio, the aim being bigwigs such as Paramount and Warner Bros. The filmmaker has until Monday to tie down the deal, having spent the weekend with both his and Pitt's CAA agents attempting to hit one out of the park—so to speak.

With a new deal not yet in place, Columbia will take tomorrow to re-examine where to go from here with Moneyball. There are several options, including delaying the film until Pascal believes she and Soderbergh are on the same page, replacing the director or, the worst-case scenario, pulling the plug on the project altogether.

This is not the first issue Moneyball has run into. While the baseball-themed flick has been approved by Major League Baseball itself, it follows a format that is less than mainstream and rarely a huge success in theaters. Soderbergh has hired Pitt to play the lead character, Billy Beane, but is also utilizing live interviews with actual athletes, including Daryl Strawberry and Lenny Dykstra, and interspersing the vignettes throughout the movie.

Reports claim that Soderbergh is confident in his project, but with upwards of $50 million invested in Moneyball, Columbia is understandably weary about moving forward with a project they no longer fully stand behind—especially at the sight of an entirely reworked script mere hours before the project was slated to begin.

Madonna's adopted daughter leaves Malawi

LILONGWE, Malawi – Madonna's new daughter has flown out of her native Malawi on a private jet headed for London, an airport employee and a person familiar with Madonna's adoption proceedings in this southern African country said Saturday.

The airport employee, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter, said 3-year-old Chifundo "Mercy" James left late Friday headed to London, with a stop in neighboring South Africa. The girl, the second child Madonna has adopted from Malawi, was reportedly accompanied on the flight by a nanny, a child nurse and a third aide.

The person familiar with the adoption, who also was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said the girl known as Mercy should have reached London on Saturday morning. Madonna has homes in England and in the United States.

Malawi's highest court had granted the adoption June 12, overturning an April lower court ruling that Madonna had not spent enough time in Malawi to be given a child.

The high court said the first judge had imposed too narrow a definition of residency, and lauded Madonna for her work with children in a poor country where half a million have lost a parent to AIDS.

Madonna's Raising Malawi, a charity founded in 2006, helps feed, educate and provide medical care for some of Malawi's orphans.

Madonna adopted a son, David, from Malawi last year.

Children's welfare groups had expressed concern that rules meant to protect children were being bent because of Madonna's celebrity, and perhaps out of gratitude for what she has done for Malawi.

Madonna met Mercy in 2006 at Kondanani Children's Village, an orphanage in Bvumbwe, just south of Blantyre. It was the same year she began the process of adopting David, whom she found at another orphanage in central Malawi.

The girl's 18-year-old mother was unmarried and died soon after she gave birth. Since Madonna moved to adopt the girl, a dispute has arisen between the girl's maternal relatives, who agreed to the adoption, and a man who says he is the father and wants to care for the girl himself, but acknowledged he had never seen Mercy.

Madonna first traveled to Malawi in 2006 while filming a documentary on its devastating poverty and AIDS crisis.

And Mama Hilton isn't the only member of the hotel heiress' clan dissin' the 23-year-old Dougster...

"The stories out there about our family not approving of their relationship are completely true," Paris' aunt, Kyle Richards, said. "Doug was riding Paris' coattails."

Richards continued, "The break-up affected me in a good way. It's definitely time for Paris to move on."

Doug, per his rep, declined to comment.

So what kind of guy should Ms. Paris be dating?

"He has to be a very strong, intelligent man who can handle being with her," Richards said. "He'll have to walk in her shadow, and it's very hard to find someone who is comfortable in that role."

Club Owner Suing Mad at No-Show Beyoncé

They didn't put a ring on it, so maybe Beyoncé didn't realize she was so wanted.

Joe Morrissey, owner of M2 Ultralounge in Manhattan, tells E! News he's planning to take legal action against the pop-R&B star for skipping out on a scheduled party appearance.

"The concert ads were on [Beyoncé's] website, our website, we had tons of people calling and coming down and we spent a lot of money setting this whole thing up," said Morrissey, who says he spent about $100,000 and put his reputation on the line in anticipation of the event, which was to celebrate the start of the North American leg of the singer's I Am... world tour.

Morrissey says that he contracted with an outside promoter and Beyoncé's manager-dad, Matthew Knowles, to have her appear tomorrow night along with sister Solange Knowles, who was supposed to sing.

View the agreement.

But on Wednesday, Matthew called Morrissey to nix the deal because the club owner hadn't paid the $200,000 appearance fee the promoter had promised, and because Beyoncé needed to focus on Sunday's show at Madison Square Garden.

Morrissey told E! that, although he wasn't affiliated with the promoter, he offered to pay the fee in order to keep the plan alive—but Knowles never got back to him.

"We had contracts in place and we told them whatever the problem was or the reason [they] canceled, we would like to fix the problem, but he stopped replying to our emails," Morrissey said. "So then our lawyers had to get involved.

"So it's just a bunch of lawyers now. Our litigation team is in touch with their litigation team."

Beyoncé's camp, meanwhile, says she never had a contract with M2 in the first place.

"The cancellation of the launch party for Beyoncé's I Am... tour, first scheduled for this Saturday at M2, was a result of a breach of contract by the promoter," a rep for Columbia Records said in a statement Friday.

"Beyoncé never had a contract with the club itself and no one in her camp dealt directly with the venue. The superstar was never scheduled to perform but was to serve as a cohost and introduce singer-songwriter Solange's performance. Patrons were falsely promised a performance by Beyoncé."

Rihanna Ready to Face Chris Brown

Rihanna, Chris Brown

Rihanna's courtroom showdown with ex Chris Brown is Monday, but is the R&B star nervous?

Not one bit, according to her lawyer.

"She's fine," attorney Donald Etra tells E! News. "She's fully expecting she'll be required to testify. She will answer all questions asked of her truthfully."

Rihanna was spotted in New York as recently as Thursday evening, but Etra says, "She will be here in time for the hearing."

Monday's preliminary hearing will feature prosecutors outlining their evidence against Brown, who has pleaded not guilty to assaulting and threatening Rihanna. She was subpoenaed back in May to testify. At the end of the hearing, Los Angeles Superior Judge Patricia Schnegg will determine if the case is solid enough to proceed to trial.

While it promises to be dramatic, the Brown-Rihanna face-off will not be televised. On Thursday, the judge announced she had banned media outlets from bringing cameras inside the courtroom.

The film follows on from 'Frankenstein' - which sees Dr. Frankenstein bring a 'human' to life from separate body parts - and sees the doctor create a partner for the monster.

However, when Dr. Frankenstein brings the bride to life, she rejects the monster.

Neil Burger - who previously worked on 'The Illusionist' - is set to director the movie and pen the script.

Guillermo del Toro recently revealed he is planning to begin work on a new version of 'Frankenstein', based on Mary Shelley's novel.

Oops She Did It Again Britney Spears

Britney Spears pulled out all the stops whilst spotted on a shopping spree in London yesterday. Did she get dressed in the dark? I really don't understand how she can go out like this, crap. Does she not know that her boobies are getting more saggy and in the next 5 years she will need a boob job.

She emerged from Gap carrying two full bags, I know she likes Gap and to be honest I think the UK Gap is more trendy than the US Gap.

Britney, along with a throng of photographers and fans, then moved on to Chloe on Sloane Street, and Jack Willis on Kings Road.

The singer is back in the capital after a less that successful visit to Manchester.

Angelina and Brad Are Giving

This may come as a complete shock I know, but Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie donated $1 million to help with the relief aid of the misplaced people of Pakistan. Us Magazine reports:

The head of the agency, António Guterres, thanked the Jolie-Pitt Foundation for the generous donation, calling Pakistan's plight "the most challenging humanitarian crisis of the past decade." (More than 2 million people are currently displaced in the country.) Since becoming a goodwill ambassador for the agency in 2001, Jolie has visited refugees in Pakistan three times. (She took Pitt with her on a 2005 trip.)

In other news, Jennifer Aniston bought new collars for her cats. They sparkle! Imagine that, they sparkle!

Paris and Lindsay Hate Jon and Kate

For the last two months, every celebrity gossip magazine cover has been nothing but Jon and Kate Gosselin drama, and when you're an attention whore with no discernible talent who needs those magazines to stay famous, that may be kind of a problem. Page Six reports:
"Lindsay and Paris hate not being on the covers of weeklies," said a source. "That's why Lindsay has been causing so much havoc and pulling these antics. And why Paris had a big blow- up with Doug [Reinhardt]."

Jon and Kate should drag this out as long as they can if only just to see what these two whores are gonna do next. Give it two more weeks and I can almost guarantee Lindsay will have a sex change to become a minotaur and Paris will hold a press conference to say she's Batman.

Lindsay Will Not Be Charged

Although she probably did it, Elle Magazine isn't holding Lindsay Lohan responsible for the $500,000 in jewelry that disappeared during her London photoshoot on June 6th.Daily News reports:

"Elle has no reason to believe that Lindsay Lohan was in any way responsible and has no further comment to make." The starlet herself is irate at having been blamed for the heist. "Lindsay thinks it's a ridiculous story and is happy that Elle is standing behind her," says a pal, "but she's really sick of getting blamed for everything bad that happens."

Lindsay Lohan has had two DUI's, stolen a car with people inside and chased a woman down PCH, fled the scene of an accident with cocaine in the car, and stolen a model's coat from a nightclub, but has never spent more than 24 hours in jail. If I was Lindsay Lohan, I'd like my chances with stealing half a million in jewelry. I'd probably feel the same about robbing a bank or bombing a daycare. Because, I'd be Lindsay Lohan after all. At worst I'd get sentences to 40 pushes on a swingset. Wee!!

Not Cool

It's easy to look past a lot of things when you're in love, but Megan Fox avoiding this fat kid like the Black Death because he wanted to give her a flower is pretty lame. Especially when he probably used all of his Twinkie money. I realize there's a lot of competition out there for Megan Fox right now, and this guy was just trying to impress. You can't hate him for that. You can hate me though. I'm used to it. I'm highly competitive in the phone sex circuit myself, so I tend to have jealously follow me wherever I go. Dude, look, yes, I made your fiancee strap her phone to her head last night and use eight fingers after you took her out to dinner. Sorry man, but I think you might be misdirecting your anger here.

Victoria Beckham Got Her Boobs Deflated

Tired of looking like a WAG (whatever the hell that means), Victoria Beckham underwent her third boob job last month to shrink her ridiculous looking 34DD bolt-ons to 34B's. Mail Online reports:
The former singer-turned-fashion designer is believed to have had the procedure done last month. She saw a Los Angeles surgeon for her third boob job and had a set of implants removed to reduce her assets from a busty 34DD to a less obtrusive 34B. Victoria is now said to be recovering in France with husband David, 34, and their sons Brooklyn, ten, Romeo, six, and four-year-old Cruz. A source told The Sun: 'Victoria has wanted her implants taken out for a while. 'She felt that was part of her old WAG image - the big hair, big boobs and fake tan - and that she has moved on since those days. 'She had the op three weeks ago and is very pleased with the results.

So to recap, Victoria Beckham was born a 34A, went to a 34D, then to a 34DD and now down to a 34B. I appreciate the fact that she keeps trying so hard, but when you look like something off Antz, it doesn't really matter how your boobs look. Victoria Beckham is basically Miss Piggy with bulimia and a plastic surgery obsession. It's amazing that she's been able to hang on to David Beckham as long as she has. Sure, he sounds like a 10-year old 1896 paperboy when he talks, but he could walk in to a sorority house right now, and at worst, be the third prettiest one there. This is gonna sound way gayer than it should, but I'd probably let him hit it. Besides, who are we kidding? I've had worse.

It's Over Again...

Wow, here's a surprise. E! News reports:

After Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson reconnected last month following their split in April, the couple has once again broken up. The duo broke things off again Monday night after a nasty argument. One major point of friction between the two was Sam's friendship with Nicole Richie, who's reportedly no fan of Lohan. "Nicole refuses even to be in the same room as Lindsay," says a source, noting that just last week Nicole invited Sam to a mutual friend's birthday party at Bar Marmont with the stipulation that she not bring Lindsay. "Sam went to the party, and it really upset Lindsay," says the source. Sam's rep declined to comment on her personal life, and Richie's rep could not be reached for comment.

I've seen more functional relationships on an episode of COPS, so I'm having a hard time understanding why anybody would date Lindsay Lohan much less take her back. She's a damn mess. That woman who drowned her kids in the tub would make a better girlfriend than Lindsay Lohan.
